Random rules question, that I couldn't answer for some return player in my area, any help would be appreciated.
The player has In Limbo in play, and has paid two life to make it so his stunned Meatmarket cannot be KO'd this turn. He has Die for Darkseid, and is wondering what happens if he plays it and attempts to KO the Meatmarket. He was saying that it should stay in play, arguing the old trick of Tim Drake and Red Star(a rule he used to know from when he played). I said I'm not sure how that works, as this is a cost. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
He would not be able to play Die for Darkseid!, unless he KO'd a character other than Meatmarket.
KOing a character is a cost for DFD, so unless the action is actually fulfilled, it cannot be played.
If it instead said "KO a character you control. Target opponent loses 4 endurance," then trying to KO Meatmarket and failing would still allow your opponent to burn for 4. An "if you do" clause with make this impossible, however.
The KO as a cost just takes it one step further. Rather than resolving without effect, it can't be played period.
I belive in this case, becuase you have to KO a character in order to play Die for Darkseid and In Limbo says target character can't be KO'd, Die for Darkseids effect wont trigger unless it finds a character to KO.
so him targeting Meatmarket with In Limbo, and then Die For Darkseid would end with a non-KOable Meatmarket, and no effect coming from Die For Darkseid
EDIT: Omega beat me to it... you win, this time... -_-
