Marquee Event Formats - Done in Ones or Legitimate Ones?
This is the topic of a discussion I had with Ludin awhile back, but, what do you guys would you guys prefer to see more 'legitimate formats' - MA, SA, GA - as the standard, or would you prefer more off the wall formats - like BYOS, BYOT.
Also, what do you guys feel about a BYOT Mega Weekend event?
Our game is definitely in a space where those are the kinds of things we can consider: I think we're developing a unique identity as a ccg fanbase, given that there's no money involved and product seems made-to-order these days. The best advertising Vs has right now is word of mouth; so if there's somebody around to explain Vs, there's somebody around to lend a BYOT/BYOS deck if that's what the current format is.
I think as a group we can definitely decide which formats we think are worth playing.
I think BYOT can solve the problem of how to include GA stuff without making the game un-fun, but I think any time prizing is involved you'll see some of the more degenerate BYOT stuff, like TNNB or QF. What have the MW GA competitions been like? Is GA still fun competitively? Does everybody bring negative play experience decks, like... I don't know, Ten Teams kinds of decks? (Maybe NPE v NPE matchups are fun for some? I honestly don't know.)
The "Fun Formats" help bring in the more casual players and help detract from the more ruthless cut-throat type crap that dominates the typical metagame.
Few players enjoy playing against the flavor of the week for 4-5 hours on their fun card game night, I'm pretty sure.
I like BYOT and BYOS as players that have left the game but still have cards can enjoy a way to come back into the game. Once they see what new goodies we got in the legend sets and MUN they are sure to come back, hopefully.
Anyway I think the game has become much more competitive in modern. In my area silver has died a bit, so that leaves players wanting fun but no brokenness to play BYOT. I know I love the format and will play anything with the format.
to say that i think the Legend format and bring own team are great. They make me feel like im playing Vs as how many invision the game.
i mean damn at no other time in VS did i have a Magneto based deck blast against a Superman deck.
Now one thing i will say i do kinda miss team ups, Like what happends when Luthor and doom team up to squash all (Ig Doom handfill).
i am worried that Bring own team does lead itself to a bit of stagnation after a while, but i do want to see a larger tournament with it out there though. The local events are nice but with like a 6-16 playerbase you dont have the best sources. I would love to see a 50 person event to show what the format can do or not do.
I love the alternative formats, but I think it should really be a cycling mix of everything...sort of like what is going on now. This way no one is left out for too long if they don't like the alt. formats. Maybe:
Silver
Punks
Modern
Legends
Golden BYOT
Alter Ego
then start all over again...
And I'd be down for ANY kind of Mega Weekend event.
But I would prefer if there was a more standard format in between each alternative.
Our local store has had alternative formats for months, and there are some decks I have been wanting to play. But been unable due to many restrictions.
I would like something like:
Silver
BYOS
Modern
Punks
Silver
Legend
Modern
BYOT
I like Silver and Modern, but I think BYOT and BYOS are good alternatives to Golden.
Golden is a tough nut to crack because it seems like there are a lot of unexplored ideas, but too many cards to wade through. Therefore the same decks like High Voltage keep popping up while new combos go unexplored. BYOT and BYOS fixes this problem by keeping options limited.
Otherwise, I think Silver and Modern formats are just fine and, at the moment, very balanced meta-wise.
I like done-in-one formats, because it almost entirely removes netdecking from the game. Deckbuilding creativity is something we really push for at our venue, so having one-off formats helps maintain that spirit.

good topic to discuss
I'm not against any of the legitimate formats remaining as a standard for tournament play. Nevertheless, it always good to consider the effects of other formats on the game.
I believe the formats like BYOT have actually contributed to encouraging new players to join our game. AndrewBircher stated it perfectly: They (BYOT) make me feel like I'm playing Vs as how many invision the game.
New VS players and a revival of sorts concerning deck creation. When it's all said and done BYOT may end of playing a more important role in the success of VS than all of the legitimate formats combined.
So then... BYOT ftw - Mega Weekend, Marquee, etc. it's good for the game.
i personally love most formats, alot of my friends like modern for the main format, i have gotten a little bored with modern, mostly because some of my favorite decks arent able to play in it.
Where i think BYOT actually beats out some other things is that it showcases how a team functions within its own merits for the most part, and you dont get too wacky a things going on. Though with a Big Brotherhood deck i did suprise some of the newer kids who had never seen a lost city location before hehe.
sofar showing decks that are single team and kinda revolve around a legend has helped showcase the game a bit more in the area as opposed to random pile. Though to be honest its incredibly easy to make a marvel based legend deck, but alot more difficult to make a DC legendary deck since it seemingly is the same all rare JLA deck just based on a different legend, and the other legends werent really that amazing, or the fact were never going to get any more dc support, i almost dont even want to showcase DC cards anymore.
