What if UDE is still in negotiations with other publishing companies other than Marvel or DC?
Would it be so terrible to play a game of VS if other non Marvel/DC property held center stage.
OSM stated it perfectly and I think it's something that we in the VS community fail to truly take into consideration: it's the game engine that UDE has designed that has made VS the incredible game that it is.
We were lost when we heard that DC card releases were on hold: negotiating new contracts can do that sometimes... but, we still had the VS game engine
We only have 2 sets released per year, but we are also in a recession. I would think that delaying the release of future OP announcements are occuring all over the United States - the economy is in a vicious downtrend.
Nevertheless, throughout all of the downturns, doom/gloom produced by no announcements and just overall heightened paranoia it's all over, we all should keep this in mind: it's the game engine.
Yeah, it's just that simple it's the game engine.
If we are being real - I'm long over having to see Marvel/DC cards only in the game of VS. I guess what I'm saying is I'd be hurt if both properties were gone from the game but, I'd be devastated if I could'nt play the game engine that UDE has designed. I get it now - It's the game engine.
To those of you who are trying to present your Fantasy cards as the next step - gotta a couple of ideas to run at you while you do what you do.
1. If you guys are serious, why not form a corporation. You would be 3rd party content providers who would contact the owners of the intellectual property in question and present to them a package that would show the profitabilty of connecting their IP with the VS game engine/UDE. You would act as the middle man of course. Remember, it's the game engine that you want to preserve and see go on at all cost: Marvel/DC will catch up when they can... you just want - we just want to play with cards designed to maximize our VS experience.
2. see above... don't let your time and artistic skills sit on the shelf. VS is very addictive as most of you who have been with the game for a time well know... If we are spending time away from our families and friends, putting aside research and study time and such - lets be as profitable as possible. I hear some of you have great organizing skills - parlay that into some type of side career. You never know: stirring up the gifts of God in you may lead to a whole new business horizon. The economy is bad they tell me and that mainly due to lack of creativity on the part of the leaders of the day. The VS game engine is just that good that in 10 years it will still allow you and I the oppurtunity to play some the most heated and broken games ever. It does'nt matter that the MSM/Superman set hurt us badly - the game engine itself has proven it's metal. Be creative, push alittle bit harder, envision yourselves beyond being heralds of Marvel/DC (if they don't seem to play well with their IP at times, why should you be so overly concerned again... ) The worst indictment against the business world is that they really lack even the most basic sense of future vision outside of what private plane they need to buy. Nevertheless, thats where we are going to show ourselves stronger than most right...
Give UDE and MEV a chance guys before we conclude the death of the game. Remember, UDE, but in particular the design team for VS knows what they are doing and I really don't see them slipping on any future design type/set concerning VS. The game engine that they've perfected is just that: to perfect for them not to continue. They just need to seek new IP providers and that just take time. But then their's you...
If it was still fun, I think I would play a gardeners world expansion.
Please
turn 7, I would Black & decker the hell out of my opponent.
7 drop Tracktor
16/16
range
activate--> at the start of the combat phase, mow the hell out of your opponent. Your opponent loses endurance equal to the combined cost of all characters that he controls.
You laughing, but I bet the Bee Gees Essential would rock
keyword: High Note
At the start of combat, hit a high note. If your opponent can't hit a note higher than you - steal the initiative. You can't play plot twist that turn.
If the situation with Vs. is as dire as it looks, they may want to try taking the game away from licenses entirely. Or at least shopping around for a cheaper license.
The game engine would work for any property which involves some kind of conflict. Including original materal.
I always thought smaller (as in less expensive) licenses would work, especially after the game moved out of the spot-light, there are plenty of marvel and dc characters to play with, and while I know the most popular independants may not be as inexpensive as we would like to hope, it may be that riding a new offer/ new title with promise and cross promoting for minimal to no licensing fees could work, maybe even a small host of new books looking to get some exposure. It could work on a number of levels.
The questions are of course
How much does the choice of licenses effect sales (if its not DC/Marvel/Pony I don't buy)?
How much does/can vs. make even if it doesn't pay licensing fees (is it enough/does it compensate for lost sales because of low name recognition license)?
How would this effect retailer acceptance (yeah you'd buy it but will they stock it)?
Who is in the know before a new book/publisher breaks who could waggle this deal?
How much are the related cross promotional costs?
Most new titles/books/publishers are clammering for readers, please read me I'm a good well written book with a solid young artist, but comics are expensive so why would you buy me over another issue of Spider-Whiner, why would you take the chance of getting hooked on yet another title, maybe for the same reason my buddy went back and bought all the X-statix he could find (and I've heard that before and from others), but is it enough?
Tons of people play this game because it has comic book characters beating each other up. Others could care less about the characters. If you lose one segment, I doubt the game would be very sustainable.

Interesting enough, I think about the game King of Hearts...
Mickey Mouse and crew shooting fireballs - who would have thought it and even moreso who would have foreseen that it would do so well.
VS has been both blessed and hampered by Marvel/DC just like other companies - ask Mortal combat's parent company and those hindering Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
Expanding IP content beyond the great 2 is the only thing I think that will give us more than 2 sets a year.
