I've been wanting to try a deck what was different from what I've made before. After a bit of a think I decided to try and make a Human Torch deck, I've been trying to get all the cards together for a while (I started playing vs. just before Universe was released so I didn't have many cards from MVL) so it's taken a while to start putting this deck together and with the release of MEV I found some inspiration in the new Horsemen cards.
Here's the list (first attempt)
4x Caliban, Pestilence
4x Caliban, Death
4x Mr. Sinister, Famine
4x Human Torch, Nova Blast
2x Rogue, Power Absorption
4x Apocolpyse, Age of Apocolypse
3x Human Torch Fiery Friend
4x Apocolypse, Mutant Messiah
4x Mental Blast
3x Total Anarchy
4x Rat-Tat-Tat
4x Heatwave
4x Firewall
4x Heroes of Two Worlds
4x Reign of Apocolypse, Age of Apocolypse
4x Frag Grenade
The plan is to get Caliban/Sinister/Apocolypse (7) shifted in the first turn, add shift counters on turn 2 and again on 3 (Trying to get 3 counts on Apoc). Shift Sinister/Caliban in to play allowing me to use Apocolypse's ability. Play Human Torch on 4 and then trying to stun as many characters as I can with Torch and Apocolypse. On turn 5 I can either under drop with Rogue to copy Torch or play Apocolypse. I've added Total Anarchy to KO low drops and to help against weenie decks. The only real problem I can see at the moment (not played the deck yet) is hitting Sinister/Caliban early enough.
I've played the deck a couple of times and the problem seems to be draw as I didn't have enough plot twists after a couple of turns. I plan on adding some cards to allow me to draw to solve this.
Shadowtrooper, thanks but I think I need to have a visible 5 Just to protect Torch and to stop a bit of breakthrough. Shifting Archangel out stops me having a character in play and I can't see me being able to shift him out early as the early turns are for Sinister/Caliban/Apocolypse (7) and I still have a problem of not being able to consistantly stun with Torch.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help draw in to my plot twists?
The suggestion of Archangel was as to keep him Shifted with 5 counters not to recruit him. In any case if you need extra draw Invasion Plans as is Vision + We can Rebuild Him works very well. The Captain of course giving him Human Torch as his first name could also get you extra cards.
I realise that the idea was to shift out Archangel but then that just leaves me with 1 visible 7/5 character on turn five when my opponent could have 5+ it may be an option as long as I can draw in to my plot twists and reduce everyone to 1 defence and stun them with Heat Wave.
I think Invasion plans needs to be added I can use Mr. Sinister for the cost and the Captain will be added at least as a back up 4, for now. I really like the combination of Vision + We Can Rebuild Him it's just that I need to look at what can be taken out to put these cards in, I would have looked in to this yesterday but I've just been concentrating on my Cable deck which looks like it's finished now.
Have you considered the 1 drop torch?
Does it have to be modern?
I'd add 1 Rouge so you can search he with Heroes of Two Worlds. Or if you switched to The Captain then 3 of him.
Would The best at what they do be better than or compliment Mental Blast
Cost: 2 The Best At What They Do
Play only from your hand.
Target character gets -2 DEF this attack, or -4 DEF if you control an X-Force character.
Just some thoughts, hows it working out so far.
The only downside is playing it from hand and since there is the slight possibility you could have an X-force character in play it could be worth another -2.
Thanks Kariggi, I've been talking to LordofLimbo today about this deck as it just seems too conditional to get to work.
I think I want to start again and take out the Horsemen and use early drops that have abilities to lower defence like Swordsman and Green Arrow (like I was originally going to do) then play Torch at 4 then under drop Rogue on 5 to copy Torch, this will mean having to run Underground Movement/SRA but I think it will make it more consitant as it doesn't rely just on plot twists to lower defence. I've been working on my Cable deck and I've just about got a Gambit deck together so this may go on hold for a little while.
