If you Set a monster, which is pretty rare outside Ryko and recruiters like Mystic Tomato, people will be weary about attacking it a majority of the time and will attempt to remove it from the field before trying to attack and with so much removal these days, chances of it being killed off without its effect working is pretty high.
It also equips itself and takes a turn to go off, giving the opponent time to get rid of it still; Tribute it for a Tribute Summon or the cost of a card, use the monster for a Synchro Summon, or as high as stuff like their own MST or Heavy Storm, which would still take out your m/t with it.
And the last factor is that the opponent can sacrifice a weaker monster to attack it and you'll end up doing little damage to the opponent; both in LP damage and loss of the monster.
Well well. A weaker monster? It always does at least 1500 damage in my games. Neat for a single monster, especially one that doesn't have to attack. Plus, if they have to tribute or sacrifice the monster its equipped to, they're losing as many cards as I do. BTW, if it is played right, I always get it into a big monster, ie FHGD or REMDD. If the deck I'm running gainst doesn't have such attack-based strategies, I side it...? Its very good in a Machine deck.
It's not very rare for people to attack and THEN Tribute/Synchro Summon from what I've seen, so they're not always going to end up losing so much. It wouldn't really be much different if they were to do it first and then hit any other monster and kill it anyways, so it's essentially breaking even, depending on the monster.
Besides, unless the monster is VERY big, (the biggest tending to be 3000, but those usually come with big effects like Judgment Dragoon) then the only thing they'd really have to worry about is losing the monster as 1500-2000 damage, unless their LP is already low, isn't really that much cause for concern (unless they need high LP for something), so you may as well have used something else to block the attack that's much easier like Sakuretsu Armor, Dimensional Imprisonment, etc. Sure you don't do heaps of damage, but you immediately get rid of the monster rather than wait a turn, and you can easily do just as much if not more damage on your turn with the threat out of the way at that time.
As said, there are reasons why these things aren't seen in the "competitive" environment; too slow, not enough advantage for people, too reliant on stuff, etc. Only really looks good on paper or in casual Duels.
ew Blast Sphere - lame card is lame - I mean it has to be face down to get it's effect. And there a long delay of until your opponents next standby phase which they probaby either just tribute the monster off for another monster, synchro summon with it or just use Book Of Moon which is at 3 but the only way I feel or think this might be useful in is burn deck but then there better things to run in them anyway.
Well, it's only really lame now because of how the meta is; all about speed and exploding. Perhaps if the meta were to shift drastically enough, it could see some use. Now if it could work like the anime and simply be played face-up and equipped (but still wait to blow up), it'd be a small step better...
