The thing that reminded me of MK and got me interested again was finding my old MK logbook. While looking through it, I came across the armies I was deciding between to play at the 2002 Nationals. I had at least one invititation but was unable to make it due to other things.
There was also a bunch of scribbles trying like heck to get the Wind Minion in an army but it seems I couldnt do it.
At the time I was scared to death of the Pyre Spirit. I still remember that. My armies were never really strategy based(meaning I didnt go into battle with a set "engine" or plan), but more swiss type where I could vary my play based on what I was against.
Also at the time I had really gotten into playing the Demiphant. While looking strickly at the numbers(90 Deg arc, high points, shallow dial) the piece isnt terrible good, it is more of a finess piece that I really enjoyed playing. I always used a 14in mover that I could help tie things up with, and quite frankely I wasnt obsessed with Demiphant doing everything so it allowed the piece to be played as more of a deterrent and way to force actions.
Looking at the Thunder Golem army is interestng because I was never much of a fan of bone-toss, and NEVER played without a healer. I am suprised I was considering it.
Man, wish i would have done an logbook on my own, would have been a great idea.
so much scribbles lost in now-where .... those where the times spending up to twice the time and lot of headache in building armies than for tourneys themselfs hehe ...
I remember seeing some demiphants at our nats in 2002, seemed to be a solid centerpiece for competive armies up to when striker and AmaDrac began to rule the boards. Your builds cerebrus don't look bad.
this was my army at nats 2002 Austria:
Techun 96
HC *** 47
LC * 28
Centaur Medic ** 29
wasn't my fav build, wish i could have divided the 75 pts for the 2 cavs into a better relation, but i had to deal with the figs I had hehe, a few month after starting with mk ...
When the KI Chariot build was winning titles back in this era, I just had to laugh! How many other CCG's/CMG's ever saw titles won with el cheapo pieces? The uber-rares and expensive stuff getting dethroned has to go down as one of gaming's greatest moments!
My current army at the time was a 300 pt Demiphant army. I had used him quite a bit and was very comfortable with him. I had done a ton of playtesting with him in 200 and had pretty much came up with Army #1 as being my favorite it terms of playability against the widest variety of armies.
Unlike, what seemed the whole MK community at the time, I was well aware of the power of a chariot. I had played against many of them and always had a plan in case I went up against one. In 300 I didnt really worry about them, but in 200 it is just too hard to be well rounded and MDF busting. I playtested it against both charriot armies and the Striker as well as some more standard armies in my area such as Deathstar and KI E@A swarm.
The key to killing a Striker is to make it push. Most Striker armies dont have enough fig's to avoid that if you pressure them. That is one reason why my most effective competitive armies always had 1 extra fig/formation for a 2 turn cycle(in the case of quickness that action could be an attack).
i used 2 peanuts one hindering and one blocking. a skeleton horde army was my only loss in constructed.
i remember my 2nd constructed match, the guy was using the Amazon Drac army and told me he was going to TRUMP me, after i captured his stupid drac and drag him back to my starting area, the guy tells me i was lucky. it was awesome.
If I remember right I won UK Nationals with a Chaos Mage, Shamen and some outriders, using a pair of Peanuts like a funnel with the narrow end towards my opponents.
If that is the right year then the Worlds was won by Paul (can't remember your second name bud) and he was fielding a chariot army (so not quite the whole community Cerebrus :) )
Some great memories of a great game.
Paul won the year before using the Chariot. I was actually sitting down against him in the single elim round of 16 when the results of my previous game were disputed and they repaired. I had beaten the same chariot band 3 times earlier in the tournament with out losing a single fig so was preparing to take down another one. That nationals was kind of bull####. They announced in the single elim rounds that any figure you had in the opposing starting area was worth double points at the end of the game. Chariots could just literally run into the starting area and win as you couldn't catch them.
