I have had a 12 and 13 year old nephews visiting the past week and they wanted to try out some of my games. The one so far they really enjoyed was Mage Knight because it was easy to learn/play but still fun. Thus we have played 12 matches over the past 5 days. I even had some friends over last night for 3 on 3 group games.
I made up a bunch of mostly rebellion armies that were fairly balanced and we mainly used those.
When I let them pick their own bands, they wanted to do a 2 v 1 500 point game and both ended up with 3-4 fig bands (storm Golem, Regal Draconum, Zombie baron, etc) versus my 600 point band of 20ish figures with lines of nightstalker***'s and Amotep gunner*** and shades. It wasn't even close. They learned the value of smaller figs and harrassers.
Tonight is the last night and they are brewing up creations from my collection while I'm at work. I think tonight I will show them the power of bounders and chargers.....
Not really. They were new players so no real innovations to be had. I got to use some figs I have never ran before like Dwarven Jarl, Bone Golems, and Thunder Golem.
My son loved that Dwarven Jarl figure and used it a lot in casual games. Some good memories. I wished the figures were balanced a little better, so you would see more figures like that one being played in more competitive games.
Rediscovering my figures in the back of my closet prompted me to get 4-5 friends together and have similar, balanced games revolving around faction-pure armies. We can't get enough of it. A few beers and some grilled food and you've got a night of intrigue, laughter, and dice-rolling ahead of you!
Ive recently started buying up figures again myself. I've gotten some coworkers interested and I have two boys myself now and old school MK is just too good to give up on!
