So I was able to land this beast recently and I've been taking a look at fitting him into armies. And all I can say is, Holy Cow! Oh how I wish this guy had been around when there was still organized play! He's just an absolute beast charge, healing, 19 defense and defend, plus a nice range attack to mix it up. I think the only thing holding him back from being a true heavy hitter is the 11 attack, but that's easily fixed with items and such.
I was playing around with the thought of giving him stick horse for fun so he can keep that charge on his whole dial, plus the reduced defense his squire would get would be mitigated by Tal's defend. But who to squire? I always love Podo for this but I also like to keep it faction pure.
What do you folks think for a squire? Also what about relics in general for this beast?
If you're set on the Stick Horse-Coconut halves combo and want to keep it faction pure, here are some ideas:
-Zeph, for cheap Leadership
-Warbard, for cheap Leadership and Hex
-Gabriel Starsdawn, for another fighter
-Bowman Nock or Galthar Sharpeye to precision-fire into whatever melee Tal finds himself
-Rivvenguard Jaysa, to Venom whatever Tal is fighting, and lay down some smack of her own
Other relics I like with the T-man are the Galeshi Sunsword if you're ok not moving him in formation, Magestone Shield to make him nigh unhittable, and Screaming Shield to limit your opponent's range options. For either of the shield relics, I'd also stick a Potion of Dueling on him, to help crack high defenses.
Was there a specific army size you were looking at? I could probably give better advice if there were.
Not really, I was just doing some speculating, wanted to ask some opinions. This guy is just too good and I was playing around with different outfits. I've always liked Stick Horse and Coconut Halves but never fielded it. Also I love faction pure but I'm not stuck on it. Thanks for the input.
It's tough, because he has such great fighting capabilities, but he's also spending a lot of points on support abilities, so you're wasting points if you play him like another 100ish point bruiser. I could see him playing a role similar to Vale's, and being the backbone of a strong Free Armies formation. He also has a ranged attack, albeit at only a 10" range, so like Keldane he could bodyguard for a formation of archers and participate in in their formation fire. Since he benefits from every one of the bonuses it provides, Spirit Armor is a juicy option, but in smaller games that might get a tad expensive, and sort of forces you down the single faction road. In general, I find the Elven Lords a tad weak on their own, but very powerful when you dedicate your army to them.
Body guard for tal'dreen the ** Rivenguard archers will benefit from his defend and healing. If u want melee bruisers with him Keldane and Gideon longblade would be great and they can benefit from his defend :D. This are the stuff that I was able to try with him that worked for me. :D
Yeah, 500 pts was always my favorite for a faction pure elf army. Herald Caliatha with Oracular codex was a force to reckoned with. And either Zeph or Mistral with Spirit Armor. I like him as the center of a ranged formation. Here's hoping I can get some games in soon.
Times like this I really wish the old MKrealms hadn't gone away, I saved every army I made. I had one that was all soaring elf pure. It was something to the effect of:
Herald with the book on a griffin
Mistral with Spirit armor
two *** Skymages
and some frost minions and maybe a charging skymage, I can't remember, but you get the idea.
I might try and piece it together again. Man that was fun, and it actually did pretty well too. Bounding, hexing, leadership some blockers. All way up in the sky. The elves might not have been the best choice in most situations, but you gotta admit they have style.
