A judge at a tourney today said that you can't use range when you use HSS. I asked him why, and he said that all HSS attacks must end in a close combat action.
Is this a new rule or does this Judge need to lay off the pipe? Any help please.

well he was wrong! tell him to look at the powers and abilities card under Hpyersonic speed and quote 3rd lines "The character may make a ranged or close combat attack at any time during his or her move" the end.
He needs to lay off the pipe. That is one of the advantages of OWAW Superman and Amazo. They can start in soaring mode, swoop down in a HSS attack at range, then return up to soaring mode. Very tough to defend against.
In my day, we didn't have Heroclix. If you were being attacked by Superman with a 3d dumpster, you just had to hope you could outrun him.
Thank you very much. That's what I thought. I checked the PAC before posting this and it seems very self explanatory, don't know what he was thinking, but it sure made my Amazo less usable today.!

It depends on if you are talking about Option 1 (the drive-by attack), or Option 2 (the standing multi-hit attack).
If he is talking about Option 1, he needs to lay off the pipe.

Indy PAC:
(1) When you give this character a move action, it automatically breaks away and may move through squares adjacent to opposing characters. This character receives one free action during its movement that it may use to make a close combat or ranged combat attack. It can continue to use the rest of its movement after making the attack.
If he is talking about Option 2, then he is correct, and can stay on the pipe.

Indy PAC:
2) Give this character a power action. It may perform a close combat attack a free action. If the attack is successful, this character may continue to perform close combat attacks as free actions against the same target. Increase the target’s defense value by 1 for each successful attack after the first until the attack ends; for each attack, compare the attack value to the modified defense value. The attack ends when the attacking player declares an end to the attacks, an attack misses, or the target is knocked back. When the attack ends, damage dealt equals the number of successful attacks made by this character with this power action.
