Since I always exclusively played mage knight with my cousins when they were little and recently started playing again now that they are older we have some questions about some rules.
- To which things do the rule of three apply? Do relics/items count? And what about the SA Defend, Battle Armor and Invulnerability?
- Can arcing fire be used in a ranged attack formation?
- Is a miniature affected by bombardment when a part of the base is within the splash zone or only when the middle of the base is?
- Are you able to make ranged attacks when at soaring level?
- Can you use charge after a breakaway roll? If not can you move in base contact with an opposing warrior?
- Does magic enhancement give +1 damage also when using shockwave or flame/lightning or stormfire?
- When using magic freeze does the target(s) also receive the full ranged damage value? (just to be sure since in 1.0 it was only 1 damage, but the combined rules don't mention it).
I might have some more questions later, but if anyone could help me with these I would be very grateful :)
- Can arcing fire be used in a ranged attack formation?
Assuming all of the figures want to use arcing fire, the answer is no. The rules for ranged combat formations include the following criteria, among others:
Each member must be able to draw an unblocked line of fire to the target.
Only the primary attacker can use special abilities or items in the attack.
Since only the primary attacker can use special abilities, the other units would not be able to use that ability to contribute to the attack.
- Is a miniature affected by bombardment when a part of the base is within the splash zone or only when the middle of the base is?
The rules define the term area of effect as:
An area measured from a warrior’s or token’s center
outward in all directions.
That does not answer the question, but I believe that in keeping with the fundamental Mage Knight rules you would use the center dot of the target. The following supports this: ranged combat is always drawn to the center dot of the target; the rules for cavalry state that the cavalry unit's center dot is used to determine whether it is in the area of effect for a bombardment attack, and the same goes for multiple-dial warriors; a warrior occupies terrain when its center dot is within the terrain; Sigmazero13, the former WK arbiter has stated when talking about circle glyphs that all measurements are done center-dot-to-center-dot to determine whether a figure is within the circle; it would not be as easy to use a figure's base, rather than the center dot, to determine if it is in the area of effect.
- Are you able to make ranged attacks when at soaring level?
Yes, and you can be attacked under normal ranged combat rules. You would get a height advantage modifier if shot by an enemy figure at ground level though.
- Can you use charge after a breakaway roll? If not can you move in base contact with an opposing warrior?
For charge the answer is no. Here is the rule:
This warrior cannot use the surge proficiency. Give this warrior a close combat action when it is not in base contact with an opposing figure. This warrior can move up to its full speed value and then make a close combat attack. This attack does not require an extra action.
(emphasis added) You can break away and move into base contact with an enemy figure.
- Does magic enhancement give +1 damage also when using shockwave or flame/lightning or stormfire?
Shockwave cannot be enhanced since Magic Enhancement only applies to ranged combat attacks, and Shockwave is a special action. Flame/Lightning can no longer be enhanced because the rule states that it does only one damage to the affected figures. Magic Enhancement will apply to a single target of the Stormfire attack, but not to any other enemy figures in base contact with the target.
- When using magic freeze does the target(s) also receive the full ranged damage value? (just to be sure since in 1.0 it was only 1 damage, but the combined rules don't mention it).
I believe that it does full damage under the most current SAC.
- Can you attack after a failed breakaway roll or only make a free spin?
- 2.0 figures have a sword attack and bow attack that allows them to do certain proficiencies (for example precision attack and surge). Do 1.0 figures have any of these proficiencies? Do they all count as having the sword attack symbol?
- When using melee combat are you allowed a free spin when attacking or if someone is for example in you back arch do you have to make a breakaway roll to spin?
- Soaring figures can attack ground units with ranged combat attack, but they can only be attacked by ranged combat. What if the enemy has only melee units left? I reckon this rule is for 2.0 when using objectives and a limited time, but I ask this because we normally play until one army is completely depleted. (If there is no rule for this I might make a houserule for this).
- Can you attack after a failed breakaway roll or only make a free spin?
No, you cannot make an attack, because you already gave the warrior a move action. You may however change the warrior’s facing. Changing a warrior’s facing on a failed break away is not a “free spin.” In addition, note that mounts and cavalry units may spin on a failed break away, unless their speed type forbids it. This may result in the warrior no longer being in base contact with the opposing warrior.
- 2.0 figures have a sword attack and bow attack that allows them to do certain proficiencies (for example precision attack and surge). Do 1.0 figures have any of these proficiencies? Do they all count as having the sword attack symbol?
1.0 figures all count as having the sword attack type. They can use the gang up and surge proficiencies only.
- When using melee combat are you allowed a free spin when attacking or if someone is for example in you back arch do you have to make a breakaway roll to spin?
A warrior that is already in base contact with an enemy figure, can no longer make a free spin. Moving into base contact with a figure triggers the free spin. The warrior can however can make a free spin if another enemy figure later moves into base contact with the warrior. Otherwise, in order to change facing, the warrior must attempt a break away as discussed above.
Soaring figures can be affected by items and domains also. Otherwise, a soaring figure cannot be attacked if the enemy only has melee units left. You are correct that a figure at soaring level cannot control or contest an objective, and that is why those figures have to come to ground level at some point, or the player cannot win. The objective tokens were designed to discourage turtling.
To clarify with the Bombardment question - any time you are measuring in this game, you pretty much always measure center-dot-to-center-dot. So to determine if a figure is in the "blast radius" of a bombardment, you measure from the token's dot to the figure's dot.
