Does Shockwave ignore Limited Invisibility in MK 1.0?
Hey all,
I’m trying to build a melee army to play someone, but I’ve been playing only MKD for 10+ years, so I’ve forgotten a lot of 1.0 melee rules. I was reading the “Mage Knight: Unlimited Official WarLord Errata & Rulings July 2002 Edition“ document and it states:
“Aquatic & Shockwave – A Shockwave attack ignores the special abilities of its target(s) for purposes of resolving the attack, with the exception of the Aquatic ability. The Aquatic ability has no effect on combat, but is not “canceled” by the attack.”
So does Shockwave inflict damage even against figs with limited invisibility?
Sigma hopefully will answer this, but I think that because shockwave is a special action, and not a ranged combat action or attack, that shockwave does affect enemy figures with limited invisibility.

Thanks, Kenntak. I actually found an earlier post on Shockwave that both you and Sigma answered that says the same thing. I may have a chance to try it out in a battle soon, my first melee army in over 10 years, 🤞.
Cheers,
Steve
That is how I have always interpreted and played it. If I put this scenario into RPG terms, a figure might be invisible to see, but it's still tangible. So if you fireball a room with an invisible thief in it, you're going to fry that thief whether or not you can see the corpse.
Similarly, if an earthquake topples a building with an LI guy standing at its door, he's still going to get crushed.
So, it makes sense to me that Shockwave is a viable option for damaging LI warriors.
This does leave open the question of does Shockwave affect figures with Ghostform, though. Per my logic, I don't think it would b/c ghosts are intangible. But then, if they are intangible, how can you hit them with close combat attacks?
The wording for Ghostform is similar to Limited Invisibility with the exception that the Ghostform figure does not block line of fire, so Shockwave should also affect figures wigth Ghostform. Since a figure can make a Shockwave attack even in base contact with another figure, it is not treated as a ranged combat attack at all. It is a special action.
DeadLast, I agree that this does not make a whole lot of sense logically, but then again, it is fantasy. :)
HeroClix' Pulse Wave power is, for all intents and purposes, the same thing, and you guys have it right. It's not always the best power to use (especially with friendlies close by), but it's the one power that gets through everything. The effort to streamline and codify Clix' rules wording really clarified a lot of questions, so if you're interested in the current discription and how applicable it still is for MK, click the spoiler:

PULSE WAVE RANGE: Halve range, lines of fire drawn by this character are not blocked by characters, this character can make range attacks while adjacent to opposing characters. (May target adjacent or non-adjacent opposing characters.). Other characters within range can’t use powers or abilities (for this action). Make a range attack targeting all other characters, at least one of which must be opposing, within range and line of fire using their printed defense values. If more than one character is targeted, each hit character is dealt 1 damage instead of normal damage.
I'll be honest that I'm not quite as strong with 1.0 rulings as I could be, as I started playing just before 2.0 came out and didn't really start as Arbitrator until then. So there may be subtle differences.
In 2.0 rules, it's allowed, because Limited Invisibility blocks you from being targeted by Ranged Combat attacks, but Shockwave is not a RC attack, and requires a special action to activate. It's kind of a "special" attack.
In 1.0 rules, however, the wording of the abilities makes me think that Shockwave does NOT ignore LI, since LI says it can't be targeted by Ranged Combat Actions, and Shockwave is a Ranged Combat Action. It says that you resolve LOS 'as if the target figures have no special abilities', but if you can't target them in the first place, then they wouldn't count. Honestly, I just don't remember the official ruling. (In a way, it's similar to why Pierce can't affect Ghostform in 2.0 rules).
Again, I am not a 1.0 rules expert like I could be, so I don't remember how it works there.
SHORT VERSION:
In 2.0, Shockwave DOES affect Ghostform and Limited Invisiblity.
In 1.0, I'm not sure, but I don't think it does (but I could be wrong).
(If someone has an old thread where I said otherwise, I'd love to see what I wrote there :) )
Sigma is right. Shockwave was changed to a special action under 2.0. I looked at the Unlimited SAC, and Shockwave was a ranged combat action under 1.0.
