A celebration of Wolverine - 100 teams in the making.
If you know me, you know I like data. And if you look to the left of this post, you could infer I am a fan of Wolverine.
I discovered him when I was in middle school, during the early 80's and when I got my first job I spent tons of money collecting most of his appearances (including every guest appearance - and in the 80's, it was a lot).
I have Wolverine's 3rd appearance, ever - the end of the Hulk vs Wendigo vs Wolverine story where he just leaps away.
I have the Wolverine and Wolverine & Kitty Pryde limited series, a run of Uncanny X-Men from 137 to 294, Spider-Man vs Wolverine (He just won't stop smiling!)
This is what I harken back to when I field the canucklehead. No Avengers, no James, no loss of adamantium skeleton, no clones - just the man trying to prove he isn't just an animal.
Why am I bringing this up - well after 16.5 years of playing, tonight I played my 100th team with Wolverine on it.
It all began with:
and
Going 8-1
and this:
at 4-4
I tried these:
1-0
1-2
0-1
This one was a favorite for awhile:
5-6
Mutant Mayhem had some terrible dials / sculpts (noseless Wolvie) so I was stoked to use this version:
2-1
And this beauty (who has one of the greatest dramatic stories ever LSS: standing on elevated and pushing to 4 damage EW Colossus and knocking him off the edge for the win - I just pictured Wolverine diving off with him since he was KO'd, too):
2-0
I had to buy this set, natch:
2-2
And I finally got a non-zombie Wolverine with a card!
3-1
Such frustration as Wolverine kept getting versions with 6 clicks of life and 15-16 defenses:
4-3
But this guy was nifty:
1-2
There was some confusion around the Captain America set, because when I pulled this guy I had no idea I pulled my first ever chase:
4-2
One of my favorite sculpts:
4-1
Followed by "Smell my taint" Wolvie and 7 clicks of life!!!:
2-1
Back to back 7 clicks and only 75 points!
3-2
Brown suit was back! The dial was meh.
2-2
And I needed to sculpt swap this guy, a dial we would see again:
3-1
WATX is still one of my favorite sets and the inspiration for my avatar with a repaint:
19-11
And his less effective doppleganger:
3-2
Good ol' AvX and a way too costly Wolvie led me to use this version:
2-1
And DoFP brought me this bad boy:
7-3
UXM gave me a few failed attempts:
3-2
and
0-2
Long life was back at the expense of offense:
5-3
And I called this guy being absolutely terrible and had to test him to see if I was right:
0-2
Great sculpt, but a Wolverine for non-fans I faced him so many times via ID cards (I hate) and teams with 3 of him meant he was destined to be sold off:
3-1
3-1
I love this idea so much, it just doesn't work:
2-5
It had been awhile since we had a Wolverine prize so I was excited to use this (again, great cost):
1-2
And this brings us to Regenesis.
Through 2 months, I was not able to pull a Wolverine and, of course, no one is trading that during this game, so I actually got to use the LE first:
1-2
But tonight - tonight... the final month, I finally pulled THE Wolverine.
And on the 100th team, I went 3-0 and came in first place for the evening and for the event itself.
A fitting celebration, I think, for my favorite Marvel character.
104 wins and 69 losses.
I look forward to the next 100 teams.
Thanks for reading.
SNIKT!!!
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.
Great post!! Really fun reading, and brought back a lot of memories of myself playing wolverine over the years. Here's to hopefully getting another wolverine smoking a cigar some day!
I feel better about not having a few of those you mentioned. DOFP Wolvie was my go to until regenesis. I managed to get all three wolvies and the LE is really good. I haven't used caveman wolverine yet, but I look forward to it.
One of my greatest Clix moments hinged upon the earliest appearance of Wolverine in this game.
Way back then, if I was playing a match, odds were good I was playing the X-Men. This was in the Infinity Challenge/Hypertime days, so I'm talking Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rogue, Professor X, Wolfsbane, and of course Wolverine. Maybe I'd toss in a Spider-Man if points allowed for it.
My brother had decided his focus would be on the DC sets at the time, and a lynchpin in his teams was Hypertime's Experienced Batman. As you may know, back then, Marvel didn't really have many anti-Stealth options at that time, and if a Stealther was parked in Hindering, you just had to get up in close and punch them. Experienced Batman excelled at that, being able to Leap anywhere he wanted to go, sit in a bush, Outwit and attack all day long. Suffice it to say, I quickly grew to loathe Experienced Batman.
One match, my brother drew his Batman into Hindering Terrain within ten squares of my Veteran Jean Grey, who happened to be adjacent to Veteran Wolverine. The moment my turn came, I had Jean fling Wolverine right next to Batman, and rolled my attack.
Two 6s. Feeling pretty good there, but that's only step one. Then it was time to roll for Blades. 6. The 7 clicks of damage would have made Batman useless at that point, but it was the knockback into a wall that finished him off. In one single attack, I had KO'd my Heroclix archnemesis off of his top dial.
I don't know that I've ever had as satisfying a Clixperience ever since.
