It's new set time once again clixers.
Follow along our primer to dominate all nine realms of sealed play. Saturnflight and Jruffing return to wage a war of words once again. Which figures are worthy of your force? Who should be cast back into the booster to learn a lesson in humility? Do either of these writers know what they're doing? Does anyone actually read these things? Read more to find out!!!

Shifting Focus: Son of Asgard: FREE: If Thor began your turn on the map, replace him with another character with this trait on the same click number. SF: Take a good look at that opening click, because this is the only 10 attack you'll find on click 1 of a rare. In constructed, shifting focus will presumably make up for this glaring defect in our titular hero. But in sealed, that's the kiss of death. The most disappointing rare pull of the set.
JR: Thor isn't great by any means. It's tough to make a good impression when you put your very worst clicks right up front. He will still see some play rounding out teams just by virtue of having the two most common keywords though, don't forget what the back half of that dial looks like.

Movement: Ignores Elevated Terrain There Isn't A Hit He Wouldn't Rather Take: When Moon Knight takes damage from an opposing character's attack, give him a Vengeance token. // At the beginning of your turn, you may remove two Vengeance tokens. If you do, modify Moon Knight's combat values +1 until your next turn. Carving A Path For Khonshu: Blades/Claws/Fangs, Quake, Steal Energy. // When one or more opposing characters takes damage from Moon Knight's attack, give him a Vengeance token. SF: Moon Knight is a savage for 70 points, a relentlessly aggressive attacker who makes the most of every click you steal from him. Like Blade, he demands to be put down fast. That's what I want from a secondary attacker.
JR: : Inflated Ego
Saturnflight's over blown praise is based on two assumptions.
-Your opponent will prioritize attacking Moon Knight
-He will survive that attention.
Both are mistaken. Without being attacked past click 1 in the first place the servant of Konshu isn't a significant threat by any measure. And if he is focused on, those 7 clicks are an easy 1-2 punch. double-tap or no-tap, it's that easy folks.

Looking for a figure who can team up with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Marvel's Merry Mutants, the Friendly Neighborhood heroes of New York, and the ragtag powerhouses of the cosmic, mystical, and undersea realms? Look no further than Dane Whitman! Does all this constructed swagger mean anything in sealed? Not really, but I'm too jazzed up and I'm giving him a great rating anyway!
JR: Black Knight makes me leery. He incentivizes B/C/F enough that I'll feel obligated to use it. I don't love trusting Blades on a figure in this point bracket. But between his bonuses to it and all he offers besides I can't call Mr. Whitman a bad figure despite that bias.

Unstoppable army of trolls: Leadership. Mastermind. When King Ulik uses Leadership and succeeds, you may instead generate a Rock Troll bystander. SF: I expected this to be another 75 point dial, which really played in Ulik's favor... his dial looks like a bargain at 65! Generally, I remain a fan of Exploit Weakness even in a set full of Psychic Blast because, once you've gotten next to someone, they don't get away easily. The perpetual generation of Rock Trolls- assuming you make your Leadership rolls- layer his defenses remarkably effectively.
JR: I don't know if I'm as big on Exploit as SF in this set, but I want that Leadership/Mastermind combo on my team. Otherwise devastating big hits are gonna be flying left and right in this set, being able to shrug off even one of those onto a 0pt pog is super appealing.

Bloodthirst: Charge, Sidestep, Giant Reach: 2. Living Armor: Invulnerabilty. // Kurse takes a maximum of 1 damage from range attacks or attacks from equipped characters. Protected: Outwit SF: Worthy
Living Armor is exactly what the tentpoles of this set need! But Kurse can hardly be called a tentpole at only 60 points, which makes him all the more frustrating to deal with. Add in a massive reach with Charge, Sidestep, and Giant Reach:2, and I expect Kurse to be first to arrive and last to fall on many a team.
JR: Close combat combatants traditionally have a natural disadvantage and a tough assignment. We've seen several who's design has faltered making up for that shortcoming. Kurse understood the assignment.

If you do, generate a character with the Masters of Evil keyword from your Sideline that has a lower point value than the chosen character. This game, the generated character can't be replaced and your opponent scores them immediately instead of when they are KO'd. Your Strategy is Pathetic Compared to Mine: Leadership. Outwit. SF: The 75 point dial here was a kindness bestowed upon Masters of Evil and Thunderbolts fans for the constructed environment. It has no realistic role to play in a sealed tournament for this set. The 35 point dial, on the other hand, complements the awkward 55s and 65s perfectly, and TK is a welcome addition to the durable melee pieces found here. 75: 35: JR: Remember Ulik, where I talked about how I really wanted to get Leadership (and Mastermind) onto my team. That's still true. Like the Outwit and the Stealth too. The only reason to consider leaving Zemo in the box is if you pulled a strong themed team. 75: 35:

Granted, he has to get close to use that attack value, which he can only effectively do through water or on the shoulder of a friend; but Throg nonetheless presents a compelling case as a budget bruiser who fits into the cracks of any team.
JR: Barring water logged map, Throg isn't really a self sufficient character. That coupled w/ no range ensure that. He's an accessory for another character. Like when everybody was putting small dogs into purses. So it's not really "is Throg good?" it's "Does Throg go with this outfit, I mean character"

My Kind of Allies: When establishing themed teams, characters on your starting force with the Asgardian or Deity keyword gain the Spider-man Family keyword. Call In Help from the Spider-Verse: When Mary Jane hits an opposing character, if no character has been placed this turn, after resolutions you may roll a d6. 3-6: Place another friendly character with the Spider-man Family keyword adjacent. Pinned By the Hammer: When Mary Jane hits with a range attack, choose a hit target. Until your next turn that character has Immobile and modifies attack and defense -1. SF: Obviously Asgardian MJ is gonna do huge things for the Spider-Man Family going forward. But here, most of her special abilities are irrelevant. (Notably, she significantly improves the performance of either of the Spider-Men from the commons.) Thankfully, her raw stats and heavyweight powers can carry her. In truth, what I find most compelling is her 60/40 point value split- perfect for filling in around those who dance around the 50 point line. 60/40: JR: Why is Mary Jane in a Thor set? Well after I made two fashion references in one primer she came running. Beefed up stats and powers or no, Mary Jane is still a supporting character here. But what a supporting character she can be! Even if "My Kind of Allies" can't fashion your pulls into a theme team, it should practically ensure an ally who goes well with "Call in Help From." Throw out some splash damage, debuff a foe, and alley-oop a close combat ally into charge range. Mary Jane is an integral part of great ensemble. 60/40:

If you do, generate a character with the Kree keyword from your Sideline that has a lower point value than the chosen character. This game, the generated character can't be replaced and your opponent scores them immediately instead of when they are KO'd. SF: Odinsleeper
Why do you need Probability Control with a 12 attack? That's clearly for someone else. Carol Danvers is another 'Guardian of the Galaxy' who threatens the theme's identity, but Recruiter is likely to push her toward Kree builds in constructed. A more durable Kate Bishop, Captain Marvel is precisely the threat we've been warning you about every time we review a bruiser. Don't even consider the 50% off option. 100: 50: JR: Too Dangerous to Live
Look I love what Carol's got offensively. I just love it even more on figures who are either cheaper or more durable. 6 clicks of life for a 100 is a tough sell. It's not like her range or defense numbers are anything particularly impressive that do a good job protecting those clicks. 3 clicks for 50 just isn't happening. 100: 50:

Wasp has the chosen symbol until you choose again. Protected: Pulse Wave. SF: Wasp is just... sorta... here. She's another recruiter who was obviously part of an intentional push to get several recruiters into circulation. Apart from that, she has all the standard elements of a Wasp dial, adding up to a thoroughly mediocre dial that can still brag that it attacks better than Thor.
JR: Wasp is a reliable contributor, but is unlikely to ever be the super-star of a team. Her size changing can be extremely helpful for initial deployment, the flexibility of letting anyone carry her while tiny or functioning as a taxi herself is huge. Depending on what you choose it can be keeping her safe from range with that +1 or clear of tokens. All these pros aren't nothing, but they don't change how relatively lackluster her direct offense is. Initially when it was pointed out that she can keep indefinitely and thus benefit from great size Willpower I said I'd up her a , but looking at the company that 4 would put her in I don't think I can do it.

Thunder and Lightning: Penetrating/Psychic Blast, Quake. SF: Thunderstrike looks a lot like what dials used to look like, with a sharp drop-off in defensive abilities after a single hit and intentional incompatibility of powers to reinforce the fact that this is a C-list hero. (A C-list hero who still attacks better than... you get it...) Inclusions like these bother me more in sealed, because it's obvious Thunderstrike is only here to slide him into the Guardians theme; he's simply another variation on Thor as far as sealed play is concerned. Don't feel bad about running him, but he can't be your best piece.
JR: Would-be bricks are a dime a dozen in this set, Charge and Pen/Psy incompatibility is the only thing making Thunderstrike stand out. When the only things causing a figure to stand out from the pack are bad things, it's not a great sign. Thunderstrike isn't unusable, but he's a below average entry in an arch-type the set is full to bursting with.

Lone Defender of Asgard: Valkyrie can reduce penetrating damage dealt by non-adjacent characters. // When Valkyrie is dealt damage by an adjacent character, reduce damage taken by 1 in addition to other effects. Dragonfang and Geirr: Blades/Claws/Fangs, but may use it if targeting up to two characters and rolls a separate d6 for each hit character. SF: Exiles Valkyrie is the only Valkyrie to speak of in this set. This is an incredible dial with enviable durability who's only held back by her reliance on Blades rolls. Unlike Kurse- who I expect to see outlasting many foes- Valkyrie is primed to die in glorious battle, but taking enemies to Valhalla with her.
JR: If Black Knight's special B/C/F was enough that I'd feel obligated to use the power, Valkyrie manages to make me actually excited at the prospect. If you can steer clear of Exploit I think you can prove SF's grim prediction of her demise wrong too.

SF: Lovable Screw-Up
Flurry/Exploit/ is an amazing new combo that I'm ecstatic to see on Wrecker's dial. Unfortunately, it's midway through a dense dial, and once you've lost the Impervious of the first two clicks, Wrecker has entered a freefall that he's not going to pull out of. This is a character who can't afford to get shot on the way in. I'm super excited to field him regardless- and hoping the map has some usable Blocking Terrain to cover his approach- but I'm realistic about his prospects.
JR: Irresistibly Bad
In a set with no Pen/Psy, Wrecker would be great. In this set however, that 17 defense means he's unlikely to even get to use that charge. I want to set up "Pound into the Pavement" on opponents, but getting that to happen relies on them making mistakes. Maybe a release map has enough walls and blocking to prove me wrong, but Wrecker doesn't have the right keywords to bank on picking map in sealed.

This is another case of 5 points buying so much more for the Prime. Why attack 2 adjacent targets when you can generate extra attackers and send them anywhere with no points lost? I'd honestly slow roll with Wrecker, using him for his Leadership(?), and let his Crew do the fighting until he's needed.
JR: That Wrecker prime's dial would already be better even without taking those free bystanders and mission points into account feels almost unfair. Mission points wins seem unlikely, but the value of those bystanders is pretty undeniable. A move action followed by generating one of those bystanders give him reach and options most close combat figure can only dream of.

Let Mjolnir Fly: FREE: If Thor hasn't been moved or placed this turn, and if no opposing character is adjacent, generate a Mjolnir marker [MAX 1]. //FREE: Roll two d6. For each d6 result (you choose the order), choose a horizontal or vertical direct path from the Mjolnir marker and then place the marker exactly that many squares away along that direct path. If either path first crosses: A square occupied by an opposing character, remove the marker and then make a close attack targeting that character regardless of adjacency-or-A piece of blocking terrain, remove the marker and then destroy that piece of blocking terrain. Goddess of Thunder: Charge. When Thor uses it, if her Mjolnir marker is not on the map, don't halve speed. Hammer Spin: Impervious. Energy Shield/Deflection, but only if Thor's Mjolnir marker is not on the map. SF: Awesome, but Impractical
Get those hammer objects ready! You don't wanna be a lame-o putting a scrap of paper on the map when you throw that hammer! I'm wary of this figure, because there is so much text wrapped up in what essentially amounts to "attack with range 6 and Improved Targeting: Right Angles". It ends up being pretty important that Thor has the hammer later on, because she essentially loses all her mobility by click 3. If this was a 75 point design, I'd be more willing to let it all hang on the hammer. But as is, I worry she's more gimmick than Goliath.
JR: "Let Mjolnir Fly" is great, just like it was when it was called "Omega Beams." Thor's actual dial does make it play a little different. Both specials provide massive incentive to keep her best trick in your back pocket to start. But after she's closed the gap I say let those hammers fly. Any time she gets knockback or a KO you can use those free attacks for quick follow ups.
Hey, love your posts! I managed to snag blade, hawkeye and Miles along with Iron All-Father last night, and managed to take second, so I appreciate the help with the team builds.
I believe mr JR misread wasp's size change a little: she does change size until you choose again, so if you do leave her giant, she will benefit from the 3-6 willpower.

Yup. Definitely flubbed that one. She'll get an edited review and an extra later today when I get back home (hate editing articles on mobile)
I very much want to stress that this isn't a dig at you guys personally, but reading these reviews of figures that absolutely destroy 99% of the figures in my collection for the same points or less getting only 2-3 stars just convinces me that I should never EVER even bother to try getting back into the game; and that further maybe it was a mistake to get into it in the first place, aside from the friends I made along the way.

Keep in mind that ratings are all within the confines of this specific set, without the benefit of constructing your team around weaknesses.
Since I can only play home games, modern age and retirement doesn't matter to me anymore. So I cherry pick the sets and only get those who is better then the one I have at home.
So far I'm looking at 7 maybe 8 figures which would upgrade what I have now. From these rare's, I've seen two that I will be looking for. King Ulik for my Asgardian Villains team and Captain Marvel for my Guardians of the Galaxy team.
I do like the looks of this set so far. I really loved the storyline when I read the comics for it a few years ago. Now I'm anxious to see this review on the SR's tomorrow.
