When two parents discover their children are Mutants, the family has to go on the run with the help of a group of underground fugitives. In a special TV edition of Comic Accurate, we spotlight Fox's new series, The Gifted!
Debuting only a few weeks ago, The Gifted is the X-Men franchise's foray into network television (after Legion debuted on cable earlier this year). The show centers on the Struckers, a well-to-do family headed by Reed Strucker, a district attorney who's made his living prosecuting Mutants and providing for his wife Caitlin and teenage children Lauren and Andy.
But when Andy's powers manifest, Lauren is also outed as a Mutant and both kids are wanted by Sentinel Services, a branch of the Government that locks up Mutants for pretty much anything. So to protect his kids from undue incarceration, Reed turns to The Mutant Underground for help. This organization consists of Mutants like Thunderbird, Eclipse, Polaris, Blink and Dreamer.
Why these figures - I'm going to be honest, this has the most proxy characters I think I've ever had in a build for this article since I've been writing it. For starters, Eclipse may be loosely inspired by Sunspot, based on his solar based powers. And Dreamer, who has mental powers on the show is portrayed by Elena Satine, who played Lorelei on Agents of SHIELD. So she got selected for the Heroclix Actor Transitive Property.
Then there's the whole Strucker clan. Lauren and Andy are seemingly based off of Andrea and Andreas Strucker, Fenris. While their non-powered mom and dad are just represented by low point pieces of a generic lawyer and nurse.
Tips for running this team - With eight characters at a 400 point build, you're definitely going to be needing Blink's Leadership. But you'll probably be splitting the team between having Blink carry around Thunderbird and Sunspot, while Polaris and Fenris go around ranging things and Enhancing each other. Lorelei might not be doing as much Mind Control, since her range for it stinks, but you might just benefit in pushing her like crazy to get to her Outwit or Perplex clicks. If you use the X-Men TA on Polaris and Thunderbird to exchange clicks of healing and you end up having to take the damage from them, get your Nurse over to them and try to get those clicks back.
Let us know how The Gifted did for you! Next week, it's another issue of Unclixed! Then in two weeks, it's an all new Comic Accurate!
A good show and I think your subs are fine, but you could have also went Morlock for Dreamer well as some of the others.
The show is definitely better than the Inhumans despite my comic preference.
"A Jester unemployed is nobody's fool." - The Court Jester "And so he says, I don't like the cut of your jib, and I go, I says it's the only jib I got, baby!
I couldn't believe they made the Fenris twins the stars of their big network-TV X-Men push when I heard it and I still can't believe it now. But when Inhumans gets an Imax release all bets are off, I suppose. Wonder if they named him Reed as a subtle dig at the FF?
Rep for "Heroclix Actor Transitive Property." Gonna do a Jurassic Park: Generations build next? ;-D
I had been working on creating this team myself at home, so I think your choices are good for the cast and there is only one reason I can't run it is the fact that I don't have the Strucker twins - Fenris. I have the old Lorelei but I was confused about why she was listed until I read your reasoning. I wasn't sure which person to pick for her but was considering Destiny.
The show itself is so much better then the Legion show from last year. I tried but gave up on it. Gifted has lots of promise to be an excellent show and I've been a huge fan of Amy Acker since her days in Angel.
The show itself does have more promise for a second season then the Inhumans. But I like both of them. Inhumans started really slow with its 2 hour premiere but has gotten better with each episode and I look forward to watching it. Surprised after the last episode that there is only two more episodes till the finale. Gifted shot out of the gate from the opening moments and is still going strong. I can see Gifted getting renewed, not so sure about Inhumans.
3 out of 8 of the characters actually exist in Clix and the rest are all proxies? I'd have waited as calling this comic accurate is deceptive. Half don't exist in comics at all and the last name Strucker as a basis for using Fenris (whose powers don't coincide with the TV show) is a leap. If the show gets its legs they may get AoS treatment eventually but its a hard pass for me as is.
I plan to binge it Thanksgiving week. I watched the first episode and saw lots o potential. That aside, Baron Strucker is the most integral part of Fenris' origin. Without rights for Hydra there's no way to be accurate which is why I'm surprised they went with the last name they did. Why not St.Croix, Stepford, Beaubier, Bedlam, Guthrie, or any other Marvel family with multiple muties? It's the only real complaint I have about the show but remove comic knowledge from the equation and it's fine.
The show itself is so much better then the Legion show from last year.
Strongly disagree with this statement! Legion was designed as a Horror/mind-f**k and delivered strongly on that. Give me a psycho-thriller any day over a show with "new" charactes (Strucker? Really? WTF!?!?). Not hating the show at all (it is good. Maybe a 6 out of 10 and I'm SURE I'm in the minority on that...) It has its moments. Needs more Robots in the Sentinel services!
