I love how this thread turned into what was specifically asked for it NOT to become.
Guys, the H-dial is gone. Forever. Get over it. It's gone because it wasn't newb, n00b, newbie or noob friendly. This was basically said on the first page. Don't read that first page though, you may cause a stress fracture. . .
- Definitely don't want to the diameter of the base to be larger, and don't want the base to be taller (the prototype seems to make it look like the height difference would be negligible, but those MK bases - yikes!)
- As far as H vs. Cup I have very, very few problems with either one.
Which leads me to
- In short, I don't want to see a lot of time, money, and effort going into something that will bring very little in return.
My H/W link does not reflect the wants for my collection, it is a list of figures that I already have, but still "want" to play.
I will tentatively say that I like the prototype base shown here better than the "cup" base, but not as much as the "H." Being able to turn the base without grasping the figure itself is always a good thing, because there are some sculpts that are just fragile and easy to break. Those are also often some of the coolest and most dynamic sculpts, so it makes breaking them even more of a shame. Depending upon how easy this new base type is to grip and click, it could potentially be better than the previous ones. Aesthetically, I think it looks fine, potentially better than the current style bases. I like the smooth top better than the look of the 'cup' that the current bases sit in.

I'm going to throw out another idea, and that's that the cup bases might work better if the "crescent" were a larger piece of plastic that simply lifted the sculpt a little higher, but allowed it to be used for purposes of turning that didn't involve gripping the sculpt itself. I'm thinking of something akin to something I remember from grade school where you'd add a little piece of rubber to a pencil that had contours to fit your fingers naturally. Something with that shape that suited the pads of the thumb and forefinger might work.
It would change the aesthetic of the pieces a little, but it might offer the leverage point people need to unstick the stuck pieces.
I like this idea, if WK keeps the "cup" style bases. If I have to grab near the sculpt to turn the dial, I like having the "cresent".

Any chance WK would produce some "pucks" of this prototype base to see at conventions? Like they did way back with the con-exclusive Ant-Man dial?

Yeah I know he said that. I'm was trying to be nice and not say I think that is a load of BS. It's not that difficult to figure out. It certainly won't turn new players away. Whereas the silly ring does. Tools are manly though. If calling it that would be too much for the lady folk say it's a utensil then. Besides if the just redesign that it won't cost us lots of R&D price hikes down the road. All it needs is a stupid handle on it.
Ummm...
Actually, it does. I've done demonstration games for kids for 3 years now, and the "H" style bases were always a turn-off for them. They are not intuitive to outside players who are only looking at the pieces while you are teaching how to play the game to another group. Similarly, the "H" style does not provide a logical or easy way to turn them outside of the ring or knowing where and how to grip the piece properly (where to place the thumb and forefinger to get the "H" to turn). Parents were often just as confused when looking at the dials and not understanding how it was a 'click' at a glance. Many simply put the pieces back down and walked away. I even had a product engineer and designer comment, after I had explained and demonstrated how an 'H' dial worked, "You do realize that's counter-intuitive, right? Those ones (pointing to the AE bases) make sense, this thing? It's a piece of ****."
After my first demonstration day, I always put the AE style bases out so that the kids could turn the dials when they wandered by and get the idea of the 'clix' in Heroclix. Hammer of Thor and Brave and the Bold have been a blessing to me and the kids. It does turn away new customers, and it does impact sales.
I like the prototype so far. I'd want to see one in person and try it to see how the it clicks.
