Between the events of Axis and Secret Wars, one team united of Avengers and X-Men came together in order to travel to another Earth in order to thwart a madman, free innocent people and learn a little more about themselves in the process. In this edition of Comic Accurate, it's the Uncanny Avengers!
I know what you're about to ask. "Arsenal, didn't you already cover The Uncanny Avengers back in 2013?" Yes. Yes, I did. And while that build could use an update, what I'm going to cover today is the second lineup! The short-lived arc that ran in the aftermath of the Axis crossover and just before Secret Wars tore everything up further. See, the original lineup of the Uncanny Avengers was in a bit of disarray...
- Cap got old.
- Thor lost an arm and became unworthy.
- Wolverine died.
- Wonder Man got absorbed by Rogue.
- Evil Havok O'Clock struck yet again (the true sign of any good X-crossover).
- Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch found out Magneto might not be their father after all.
But it was that last development that set off this story as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch went to investigate their true parentage on Counter-Earth! For those unfamiliar, Counter-Earth is a world opposite our own in our galaxy. Apparently one of multiple Counter-Earths, but that's a mess probably better settled another time. Anyways, this particular Counter-Earth is under the control of the High Evolutionary, who rules the planet by creating millions of lives, then wiping them all out before starting over. Not exactly a step up in father of the year material for Wanda and Pietro and a dangerous situation for them to be walking into. So Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, along with Rogue, Doctor Voodoo, Vision and the now morally inverted Sabretooth follow to try and save them.
But since nothing goes according to plan, Sam gets zombified, Vision hooks up with another robot and has a LOT of kids, Wanda and Pietro find out they have a sister and like the ending to 'Return of the King', Voodoo brings in an army of dead spirits as the cavalry to stop the High Evolutionary.
(That's 800 points, contrary to what the team display script seems to be adding up.)
Why these figures - New hotness! Four new pieces from the Uncanny X-Men set with a neato trait between them. And all these folks have the Avengers keyword so you've made theme! How you decide to fill the remaining thirty-six points is up to you really. I went with a cheap ATA that might make for a nice combo with the Unity Division trait if need be and some feats to help Quicksilver ignore hindering terrain and get the most out of Sabretooth's regen clicks. But if you don't want to go that route, you can keep things even simpler: use a loaded up Avengers Round Table or the Secret Avengers ATA for some Outwit protection. Use the Avengers Response Unit ATA and a different feat. Or just go all feats, tacking Contingency Plan on Rogue and Camouflage on Vision. Your call.
Tips for running this team - There's a simple strategy for this team: Have Rogue, Sabretooth and Quicksilver moving up to your opponent and running interference while Falcon and Vision shoot them from range as Voodoo and Scarlet Witch can move around providing support with perplex and probability control. Worst case scenario, have your team retreat and use the Unity Division trait to heal up. Bonus if the Heroic Age ATA pulls tokens off your guys after moving.
Let us know how the Uncanny Avengers do for you! That's it for this edition of Comic Accurate! Next week is an all-new Unclixed, and in two weeks, it's the final mission for a government super-team.
awesome article. I thought the art was particularly gorgeous for this run, and while the story was mediocre (IMO) the team selection was unique and eclectic with its inclusion of Sabretooth and Dr. Voodoo

I really liked the Uncanny Avengers, the characters were an interesting group that we hadn't seen together before. I'm equally excited about the Unity Division clix in Uncanny as I dread their high rarities.
What I've noticed over the years is that everyone and they momma has been an Avenger. Good guys, bad guys, mutants, and people from other teams like FF and the Defenders have been Avengers.
When everyone is an Avenger, then no one is.

Completely agree with you on that one. It can be somewhat annoying. I wish that they would create Avenger sub-keywords like they did in DC...Trinity war had JL America, JL Dark, etc...They could easily do that with Avengers, West Coast, Mighty Avengers, Uncanny Avengers, New Avengers, etc...but everyone continues to have same old "Avengers" keyword.
The problem isn't with keywords or even clix. The problem is with Marvel.
Avengers are as hot now - or hotter - than Batman in the 60's when every other DC cover featured Batman.
It's about money I'm afraid. You have a C list character and want him to get more exposure? Make him an Avenger!
Back in the Silver Age there were decisions based on character that drove the Avengers rosters. Spidey was offered membership and refused - for personal reasons, mostly concerns about privacy and family. You would NEVER see that today. Namor refused because he was too focused on his role as monarch of Atlantis and the perceived wrongs from the surface world against his people. Not today. Daredevil refused because his powers wouldn't work well with a large group - too much confusion for his hyper-senses!
But today it just doesn't matter. The more the merrier! More Avengers and more Avengers themed books equals more money!

Great article because my friends and I all ways play 800 point games and this team would work great and the fact that I love the uncanny avenger books, helps to :-)
