When a series of unfortunate events strikes Superman's girlfriend, good fortune steps in and helps her out. But there's more than meets the eye here in this edition of Comic Accurate; it's "Lois Lane's Luckiest Day!"
(Author's Note: The story I'm covering today is NOT the one in that insane header image of Lois Lane #50. What we'll be looking at is the back-up story from that issue. I first read it when it got reprinted in one of those old Best of DC Blue Ribbon Digests. I was originally putting together a team based around Jimmy Olsen, but as I was thumbing through the digest looking for the story featuring him, I came across this story and simply put, it was too insane to pass up. Jimmy can wait until the next edition.)
Ah, the Sixties. The era that gave us Superman comics so insane, that decades later the term "Superdickery" would be coined in conjunction with these books. And the craziness in Lois' book was no different. One such story is on the cover. Seems pretty nuts just based on that. But then we get another story, "Lois Lane's Luckiest Day!"
The plot was thus: Lois Lane is meeting with her fan club. Which already seems a tad narcissistic, but after showing off an earring Superman gave her and handing out some tips for burgeoning reporters, she meets with three applicants to her fan club. In order to join, they have to accompany her on a story she's doing as a volunteer for a hospital. An odd sort of hazing to join the club as opposed to just paying a membership fee, but let's continue.
Things don't go very smoothly at the hospital. She drops her special earring down a sink! A collection of rare intergalactic flags Superman gave go flying away! Also, some mental patient tries to attack her. But Lois gets a suspicious streak of luck in her favor! The earring and the flags are recovered... and she's also not beaten to death with a stool. Should she be thankful for one of those things more than the others? Probably. But her reporter's intuition and a very odd clue lead her to the conclusion that it wasn't just random chance that smiled on her that day. Lois deduces that the three women that were shadowing her were none other than Legion of Super-Heroes members Phantom Girl, Triplicate Girl and Shrinking Violet!
The story ends when, and I swear I am not making this up: They erase her discovery from her mind. And then, once the Legionnaires are back undercover, they turn in their stories relating all the facts of that day. Lois subsequently scolds them for missing the human interest of her incredible luck and turns them down for membership in her fan club. The ladies of the Legion then return to the future and have a good laugh at Lois, presumably because she's long dead by then.
Why these figures - I know. I KNOW. Those figures are from a different incarnation of the Legion than the one in the 60's! But as we can't count on Wizkids to even give us ####ing Light Lass, I'm not holding my breath that they'll make every version of a Legionnaire from their many, many different timelines. Compromises must be made. And hey, Lois isn't wearing a nurse's uniform! We will have to persevere.
Tips for running this team - Don't be afraid to hang Lois back. She's going to be the wildcard fuel here and grant the other ladies the Superman Ally TA. Which might seem redundant since none of them have any range, but at least Vi can outwit characters hiding in stealth. And I added Dissent so if the opposition has a mystic or something on their force, it might come in handy. Get the Triplicate Pogs in there swinging first and
Let us know how this team of ladies does for you! That's it for this edition of Comic Accurate! Next week is an all-new Unclixed, and in two weeks, that team featuring Jimmy Olsen I promised.
It figures, Superman is a tightwad and only bought a single earring for Lois. Super-chump! I love getting reminded of these old stories from my misbegotten youth, reading funny books to get over the boredom of having to travel to visit family. Best part was my cousins had hundreds and hundreds of comics like this from their youth and always let me take a stack home!
Enjoyed the read and any LoSH team sounds good to me.
"A Jester unemployed is nobody's fool." - The Court Jester "And so he says, I don't like the cut of your jib, and I go, I says it's the only jib I got, baby!

Not really. They all are from the Geoff Johns Legion which is the unrebooted Legion, the original Legion brought back into mainstream continuity. However, PG does have a power inappropriate for the original version to have. So, they're basically fine, they are the same characters, just further along their timelines.
One might also say that Lois isn't the old Lois either, but that would be splitting hairs.
what a fun, quirky team. great use of vintage silver age craziness. extra rep for not going with an obvious build with lois and instead reaching through for something I doubt i'd ever found on my own
I just laughed and laughed and laughed!!. I actually have this issues and just had to pull it out because I sure didn't remember that back story thanks for this one, really!
This was a fantastic use of my time after a long day. Great read, i can't wait to see the Jimmy Olsen follow up.

Even with them three points over and my team effectively down by eighteen since I never used Dissent, I managed to win. A narrow win, mind you, but a win nonetheless. Vi and Phantom Girl chased Adam around while the Triplicates and Lois ganged up on Hollywood. Vi and Lois would counter the defenses while PG and TG made the attacks. I lost Lois and the Triplicates, and the other two ended the game halfway down their dials, but they won!
