While we are getting the umpteenth version of Superman and Batman, there are still oh so many more or less popular characters out there that are still waiting impatiently for their Heroclix debut. In this edition of Unclixed, it's the villain known as Damien Dahrk!
In 1999, the classic Teen Titans had reunited in a new book with a group of young heroes they were going to help guide along in the superhero world. But with this new roster came a new foe: Damien Dahrk, the new leader of HIVE. Damien’s defining trait was that he was a ‘new school’ style of villain. He used cell phones and modern technology, cut right to the chase and didn’t stand around explaining his plan to the superhero as they plotted to thwart him.
Damien would be a thorn in the side of our young heroes for about a year when his plans came into conflict not just with the Titans, but Vandal Savage and his anti-Titan team, Tartarus as well. This came to a head as Damien’s co-conspirator Adeline Kane (also known as Deathstroke’s ex-wife) was the centerpiece of Savage’s plan to use her regenerative blood to become an immortality formula. In the end, Savage and Tartarus were defeated, Adeline was dead and Damien had been taken into custody. Only thing is, Damien got an injection of Adeline’s blood and was now nigh-unkillable.
Unkillable or not, that was the last we saw of him in the comics (unless he’s turned up in The New 52 or Rebirth and I’m totally unaware).
Fast forward to 2015. The CW TV series “Arrow” is entering its fourth season. Actor Neal McDonough had been cast as you guessed it… Damien Dahrk. In this version, Damien runs HIVE but the main difference is that this incarnation of Damien is a expert in mysticism and older. Way older. To the extent that he was a rival of Ra’s al Ghul. The character is no longer on Arrow, but now appears on the spin-off show “Legends of Tomorrow”.
Just imagine, today this type of villain would be using social media as a tool for evil. Sad, right?
Why clix him? For the comic version, Teen Titans enemies don’t get a lot of love outside Deathstroke, Brother Blood and the Fearsome Five. Even though he was only around for a short time, he should definitely be on the shortlist of Titans foes made.
And as far as the TV version goes, characters adapted for an audience with a larger mainstream reach than comics themselves have nowadays should definitely be made. And with the existence of that Arrow three-pack in Clix, it might be high time to make a set based off of the Arrowverse, complete with the new folks the shows have rolled out this year like their interpretations of Wild Dog, Vigilante and Steel.
Who would he play with? Comic version would work with HIVE and that’s about it. The TV version can also work with Hive, but also mystical figures and no, I swear I’m not making this up, The Legion of Doom.
What would his dial look like? The comic version would not have much. Mastermind, Outwit and some fancy Leadership trait or special power for use with characters with the HIVE keyword.
The TV version would be a bit beefier. He’d probably have all the same powers as the comic version, but also adding in the Mystics TA, Telekinesis, Steal Energy, Super Senses and Probability Control. Probably some really strong damage reducer for the end of his dial to represent when he got really powerful.
What would your idea of a dial for Damien Dahrk look like, folks? Feel free to reply as that's it for this edition of Unclixed! Be here next week for an all new Comic Accurate! And in two weeks, we spotlight a DC hero!
An arrowverse starter set or a WB grav feed would be lovely. Or he could be squeezed into the next (non-elseworlds) DC set as a comics villian.
But blonde. He must be blonde!
Mastermind, Outwit, Prob Control, & Regeneration are a must.
He will also need H.I.V.E. generics to go along with him, and either they should have a minion power and/or he should have some commander power to play together.
Neal McDonough tops the list of actors I plan to back away slowly from if I ever meet them in person. He was horrifying in "Justified" and disturbing in "Boomtown." (I didn't make it through "Arrow" far enough to meet him.)
Shout-out for "Boomtown" for those who haven't seen it. The first season is very good, and the show nails SoCal in all its sun-drenched dark weirdness.
The utility-belt-o'-cellphones is hilarious. There is no comic-book evil like '90s comic-book evil.
